Police are investigating what could have caused a Leopold Street man to be riddled with bullets on Durban Street today.
The shooting occurred at the corner of Durban and Smyth Street, Georgetown. The dead man was identified as 38-year-old Anthony Charles, called “Skiddle”. Charles was reportedly cleaning a drain in the area when two men pulled up in a car and started to indiscriminately discharge rounds at him.
At the scene, pandemonium broke out as family members and friends gathered, only to witness Charles lying in a pool of his own blood. Eyewitnesses say that after being shot multiple times, Charles fell to the ground and began gasping for breath, while asking for help.
“As soon as we heard the gunfire we ran for cover, and people started just finding a place to hide because there were a lot of gunshots. But even when it stopped we kept hiding because you’re never sure,” the eyewitness said.
It was further revealed that Charles remained on the ground, before he lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead on arrival by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT).
Charles is no stranger to the law. He was recently charged with several counts of armed robbery at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Police say their investigation is ongoing.
