On Tuesday last, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha met with several farmers from Ituni in Region Ten to discuss concerns and issues faced as it relates to agriculture in the community.

While praising the efforts of the government to transform the sector so far, farmers requested the minister’s assistance with following up on requests made for leases to expand their cultivation.

Farmers also sought assistance with managing Acoushi Ants, which are deemed one of the most troublesome pests in agriculture.

Minister Mustapha told residents that land leases fell under the purview of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission. He assured farmers that he would engage GLSC’s commissioner and a team from the ministry and the GLSC will visit the area to meet with them and track the status of their applications.

As it relates to other issues raised, Minister Mustapha said farmers will also be able to benefit from the necessary inputs to expand their cultivation and that officers from the ministry will return to the community in the coming weeks to deliver on commitments made.
