Suspect in DJ’s murder claims self-defence
Relatives of the suspect who allegedly murdered a radio DJ last week handed him over to the police yesterday. This is according to Guyana Police Force ranks who confirmed the arrest of 20-year-old Dwayne Thomas.
A source close to the investigation revealed that Thomas was escorted by a relative to the Brickdam Police Station. The relative told the police that he confessed to the murder of 28-year-old Brian Pitam.
It was further noted that the suspect told Detectives a different version of the story than the one given by eyewitnesses and Pitan’s family. Thomas claimed that he acted in self-defence against Pitam.
He also denied trying to harm Pitam’s father-in-law. Reports were that Pitam went to the aid of his father-in-law who was reportedly being attacked by Thomas. The source said that a statement was taken from Thomas and is expected to be processed for court.
Reports are that Pitam and his father-in-law, 51-year-old Kumar Bacchus, were imbibing at a shop in Laluni Street when the three suspects confronted him in an apparent robbery attempt.
Bacchus received injuries to his head, back, and shoulders during the ordeal. It was reported that after Pitman witnessed what was occurring, he rushed to Bacchus’ aid.
Pitam was then dealt several chops about his body. Thomas and two others reportedly escaped on motorcycles. Pitman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
