Some 20 agro processors of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) will be eligible for training designed to help them improve their operation. This development comes on the heels of the inking of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and the Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD).

Signing the MoU were Mrs. Jewel Sears, Deputy Director of GA-FDD and Mr. Richard Rambarran, Executive Director of GCCI.

The MoU, which was signed in the GCCI’s 156 Waterloo Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown boardroom on Wednesday, stipulates that both parties will keep close contact and collaborate for MSME development by enhancing the understanding of the Quality Standards required to operate effectively as an agro-processor in Guyana. The collaboration will also help to advance MSME’s application of knowledge and skills gained to improve food safety practices and food quality.

The signing of the MoU has paved the way for training to be delivered to a maximum of 20 existing agro processors including: men, women, youth, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and indigenous groups in quality standards. In addition to the existing arrangement, the collaboration will also be extended to future mutually agreed MSME Quality Standards development initiatives.

Based on the MoU, the parties have also agree that the scope of work will be carried out according to the terms and conditions stipulated in an accompanying Appendix which shall be subject to mutually agreed amendments from time to time for new initiatives.

The MOU was enforced from the day of its signing and shall be valid for one year. However, it was agreed that it shall be extended for successive period once the concerned parties agree.

The realisation of the MoU was made possible through the concerted efforts of Mr. Eusi Evelyn, Project Liaison Officer of the Caribbean Development Bank’s Caribbean Technological Consultancy Services Network (CTCS), along with other staff members of the Chamber.
