Food for the Poor (Guyana Inc.) (FFPG) categorically stated today that it has never donated expired drugs or medical supplies to recipients. This comes on the heels of an allegation that millions of dollars in medical supplies were dumped by officials in Region 2. The supplies were reportedly donated by the charitable organization.
In a statement, the organisation said, “Food for the Poor (Guy) Inc. would like to clarify that at no time does the organization donate expired medical supplies. Before any medical supplies or pharmaceuticals are donated to the
Ministry of Health or any Public Health Institution, an offer which provides details and expiry
dates of the medical items are made to the Ministry of Health.”
It further noted that an “offer” is signed and accepted by a senior official before the items are donated. The group also said that it is up to the institution to utilize the donated supplies before they expire.
In addition, the organization said, “We provide emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicine, educational materials, homes, support for vulnerable children, care for the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance. We continue to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in Guyana.”
Last Friday, millions of dollars worth of medical supplies were dumped at a site at Queenstown Backdam in Region 2. A video posted online revealed that the supplies were seemingly in a good condition.
Regional Health Officer, Dr. Ranjeev Singh later said that the supplies that were dumped were either expired or spoiled. He also informed citizens that the supplies were discarded at a location at Zorg-en-Vlijt in Region 2.
