On Saturday last, an accident occurred on the De Willem public road in West Coast Demerara (WCD), leaving a 25-year-old motorcyclist injured. The incident which took place at approximately 20:50hrs, involved a motor pickup owned by the Guyana Police Force and a motorcycle owned by Isaac Trotz and driven by Shamiz Farook.
According to police enquiries, the motor pickup was travelling east along the northern side of the road at normal speed when the driver attempted to overtake the motorcycle, which was travelling in the same direction in front of him. However, Farook suddenly attempted to turn across the road from north to south, resulting in the left-side front portion of the vehicle colliding with the right side of the motorcycle.
As a result of the collision, Farook fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries to his head and hands. He was transported to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was examined by Doctor Looknauth before being referred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was admitted to the male surgical ward. His current condition is stable.
The driver of the motor pickup, a police constable, was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which revealed no trace of alcohol in his system. However, due to the nature of his injuries, Farook could not undergo a similar test.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
