The Ministry of Public Works – Sea Defence Board has announced new vending restrictions along the Kingston Seawall. These rules are aimed at enhancing the recreational areas for a safe, clean, family-friendly and tourism-focused environment.
In a notice released to the public, the Sea Defence Board strictly prohibited vending activities in four specific sections of the Georgetown Seawalls, which includes the foreshore between the Fort Groyne and Camp Road, waterfront promenade between NCERD Road and the Seawall Tarmac, waterfront promenade and ramp adjacent to the Seawall Bandstand, and Seawall Bandstand and surrounding Seawall Road.
Authorized vending activities are now restricted to allotted shops or vending units within the Georgetown Seawall Waterfront Development, located south of the Seawall Bandstand. The notice also stated that any unauthorised vendors currently conducting business within the restricted areas must immediately desist from such activities and remove all structures and belongings from the reserve and foreshore. Failure to comply with the directive will result in enforcement actions by the Sea Defence Board.
According to the notice, unauthorised vending activities have contributed to encumbrances, congestion, noise pollution, and extreme levels of littering around the Seawall Bandstand and adjacent areas. Certain vendors have been blocking the Seawall promenade and vandalising infrastructure and amenities installed by the government for public use. Therefore, the Sea Defence Board is taking strict enforcement measures as part of the government’s initiative to enhance and organise the recreational areas along the Georgetown seawalls.
