The Government of Guyana has yet to receive official comments and recommendations from the political opposition regarding the drafts of two model Production Sharing Agreements (PSA). This was highlighted today by Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo during an engagement with members of the media at Freedom House.
Jagdeo was at the time addressing issues regarding documents being laid in the public for consultations and the absence of productive feedback from the opposition even in light of its consistent heckles.
The Vice President said following the publishing of the new model PSAs on March 14, the opposition came to the fore to criticize the two-week timeline given for public scrutiny. Even though the deadline has passed and it is still taking comments, the opposition is yet to definitively state if it will be making a submission. “We posted the PSA and then the comments were very few. APNU until now is still thinking about whether it will make a comment or not,” he said.
He also recently confirmed that the government is still accepting comments as it is “taking every comment seriously” and will “not ignore people’s comments.”
Vice President Jagdeo had emphasized the government’s commitment to securing more benefits for Guyana from the fiscal side and highlighted the importance of a PSA that could regulate the sector from a safety and environmental perspective while promoting local content.
According to Jagdeo, the political opposition habitually criticizes government documents but fails to provide productive reasoning when challenged.
