Kessee Edwards, a 30-year-old construction worker from Friendship, East Coast Demerara (ECD) found himself facing a slew of charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer during a routine traffic stop last Friday.
Edwards appeared before Magistrate Liverpool at Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court #1 to face nine charges related to the assault and subsequent events.
The charges levelled against Edwards include dangerous driving, operating an uncertified motor vehicle, failure to comply with police directions, prohibition of tinted glass, failure to wear a seatbelt, assault with intent to prevent lawful apprehension, disorderly behaviour, using abusive language, and leaving a motor vehicle in a dangerous position.
Edwards pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, he was remanded to prison until May 17, 2023.
Police Constable Harlequin was carrying out traffic enforcement duties alongside another officer when they stopped a heavily tinted motor vehicle with license plate PAD 3136, driven by Kessee Edwards, at approximately 16:45hrs. Constable Harlequin approached Edwards to inform him of the tinted vehicle violation and requested him to accompany them to the Sparendaam Police Station for further inspection.
But Edwards allegedly sped off, running over Constable Harlequin’s right foot in the process. Undeterred, Constable Harlequin quickly engaged in the pursuit, trailing Edwards until finally intercepting him near the Turkeyen access road, in the vicinity of MovieTowne.
Upon exiting his vehicle, Kessee Edwards approached Constable Harlequin and reportedly began hurling abusive language. Faced with escalating tensions, Constable Harlequin promptly called for emergency assistance. A scuffle ensued and Edwards was joined by another man in the beating. Constable Harlequin was allegedly bitten on his left ear and received several punches about his body.
