Death row convict Mark Royden Durant also known as Royden Williams and “Smallie” today escaped from the Mazaruni prison. This is the second time the inmate has escaped.
According to information reaching Guyana Standard, during a routine search of the prison, an altercation broke out between prisoners and officers. During that altercation, Durant reportedly made his daring escape in broad daylight.
The prisons however provided little details, only stating, “… Durant escaped from the Mazaruni Prison with the assistance of external persons. However, the Joint Services is currently pursuing the escapee.”
Back in 2017, he was intercepted in a minibus which was heading east along the public road at Weldaad, West Coast Berbice (WCB) around 20:00hrs.
Durant, who escaped from the Camp Street Prison during a riot on July 9, 2017, had been on the run for over three months.
The wanted man reportedly adopted a new look by removing his dreadlocks, and was living among the residents of West Coast Berbice.
According to a statement from the police, Durant was travelling alone and unarmed when he was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation.
