One of the persons who reportedly helped death row convict Mark Royden Durant also known as Royden Williams and “Smallie” escape from the Mazaruni prison, was shot and killed during a confrontation with members of the joint services.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a brief statement reported that intelligence led to a confrontation with one of the accomplices, who was fatally shot along St Mary’s logging area, located in Region Seven.
St. Mary’s is located up the Essequibo River, miles away from the Mazaruni Prison where Durant escaped from on May 19, 2023.
While the police did not release any information on the accomplice who was shot and killed, it was stated that the search for the convicted killer and his accomplice intensifies.
The recent jailbreak is the second time Durant has escaped. With little detail surrounding the recent escape by Durant, authorities said he escaped from the Mazaruni Prison with the assistance of external persons.
Moreover, last week six persons including four prison officers were remanded to prison for the role they allegedly played in the escape.
