Deputy Mayor, Alfred Mentore on Tuesday revealed the Vendor Committee within the Georgetown Mayor and City Council has been disbanded. This announcement took place during a press conference where updates on the garbage situation in Georgetown and other pertinent issues were provided. The Deputy Mayor’s statement was prompted by inquiries regarding Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo’s recent accusation that the council has neglected its duty to maintain a clean city and adequately address vending-related concerns.
Mentore conveyed that the Vendor Committee has been dissolved, with there being plans to establish a new committee once the new council assumes office after the Local Government Elections (LGE) on June 12, 2023.
Mentore emphasized that vending is not only a means of livelihood but also a cherished aspect of Guyanese culture. He highlighted that vending often becomes a family trade, with individuals passing down their roadside vending spots to their next of kin. While acknowledging the significance of respecting people’s way of life, Mentore underscored the council’s commitment to preventing unlawful vending practices.
Furthermore, Mentore underscored the complex nature of addressing vending issues in Guyana, which he admitted have persisted for nearly five decades. He cautioned against expecting immediate resolution within one to two years, while stressing that overcoming these challenges requires sustained efforts.
Looking ahead, Mentore disclosed that the forthcoming committee will prioritize the exploration of long-term and permanent vending solutions. Such endeavors will necessitate collaborative efforts between the central government and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration. Mentore also emphasized the importance of both parties working in tandem to rectify this issue.
