Police are investigating the murder of Dharamdeo Singh, a pensioner and resident of the New Amsterdam Dharm Shala. The incident occurred on Sunday last at about 21:00hrs at the institution. The crime was reportedly committed by a man in his 70s.
Enquiries disclosed that the 62-year-old and his attacker were seen arguing and shortly after, the suspect, who was armed with a piece of wood, lashed Singh several times about his body.
The victim was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival and the body was escorted to the Arokium Funeral Parlour. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled.
The suspect was arrested and is assisting police as investigations continue.
