Over 300 voters from a Corriverton constituency preferred to throw their votes behind a dead People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) candidate in the 2023 Local Government Elections (LGE) held yesterday, rather than support a candidate for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
During a press briefing this afternoon, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, the General Secretary of the party, revealed that Corriverton was one of the seven townships won by the PPP/C out of a total of 10, including Mabaruma, Anna Regina, Rose Hall, Lethem, Bartica, and Mahdia.
Explaining the election results in Corriverton, Jagdeo noted, “I told you at a previous meeting that APNU will win one because one of the candidates for the constituencies passed away and you cannot replace that candidate before the elections.”
He further stated that although APNU’s candidate received 116 votes, the deceased candidate still managed to secure 333 votes. Jagdeo emphasized, “The people don’t want the APNU in that area. The people voted to prove a point. So a living APNU person, the people rejected him in favor of a candidate who had passed away because they don’t want APNU’s negative policies to touch their community. This is a shameful thing.”
Additionally, Jagdeo announced during the press conference that the PPP had won the popular vote in 66 out of the 80 Local Authority Areas (LAAs) based on the party’s calculations. The PPP outright won 62 LAAs and tied in four areas, however, in the tied areas, the party won the popular vote, which traditionally results in its representative obtaining the chairmanship position. In contrast, he said, APNU only won 14 LAAs, which is a decrease from the 23 it had won in 2018.
