Two miners, Trayon Hastings and Rocky Norton, tragically lost their lives in a mining accident at Kamarang Landing, Upper Mazaruni. The incident occurred around 22:30 hrs at Moonlight Backdam, Kamarang Landing. Trayon Hastings, 38, a resident of Kamarang Landing Upper Mazaruni, owned a six-inch land dredge mining operation at Moonlight Backdam, and Rocky Norton was working as his employee.
The incident took place on the evening of August 2nd, 2023. At approximately 22:30 hrs, Hastings and Norton were working in the mining pit without other workers present. Mark Embelton, a 37-year-old Miner from Kitty, Georgetown, who was located in a nearby camp, noticed the mining pit collapsing and promptly alerted others about the situation.
In response to the alarm, a search party was swiftly organized, with the assistance of two excavators. Unfortunately, the search did not yield positive results until the morning hours of August 3.The lifeless bodies of Trayon Hastings and Rocky Norton were discovered at approximately 12:30 hrs and 01:20 hrs, respectively.
Upon examination, Trayon Hastings’ body displayed injuries to his abdomen and head. Rocky Norton’s body showed injuries to his right-side ear. Following the discovery of the bodies, they were transported to the Kamarang District Hospital, where Doctor Mark Allen examined them and pronounced them deceased. The bodies are scheduled to be transported to Georgetown for post-mortem examination.
The police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
