Police authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into a tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in a fatality on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. The incident occurred around 19:50hrs on Sunday, leaving a community in shock.
The victim has been identified as Shamar Charles, a 20-year-old resident of Swan. According to preliminary reports, Charles was walking along the eastern side of the road when a motor car, the driver of which remains unidentified, struck him. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at high speed in a southerly direction.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that Charles attempted to cross the road from east to west when the collision occurred. The impact caused him to fall onto the road, leading to severe head and body injuries. Guyana Standard was informed that the driver fled the scene without stopping to provide assistance.
Concerned citizens rushed to Charles’ aid, lifting him into a passing vehicle before transporting him to the Diamond Diagnostic Center. Medical personnel at the centre attended to him, but tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The victim’s body was transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted shortly.
