Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred around 02:00hrs this morning (Monday) on the Cotton Tree Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
The accident involved two motor cars, each with occupants who now face the aftermath of the devastating collision. The first vehicle, bearing licence plate number PWW 5977, was driven by 22-year-old Rajendra Deonarine from Bath Settlement, WCB. Accompanying Deonarine were a 29-year-old female and a 20-year-old male.
The second vehicle, identified as motor car PTT 7168, was driven by Carlton Maltay, a 60-year-old resident of East Canje, Berbice. Maltay was joined by passengers Jurjan MacAndrew and Auria Maltay.
Enquiries disclosed that PTT 7168 was proceeding east on the northern drive lane at a fast rate. While negotiating a turn, Maltay lost control of the vehicle and collided with PWW 5977, which was proceeding west along the southern drive lane.
As a result of the collision, the driver of PTT 7168 and occupants Auria Maltay and Jurjan MacAndrew received injuries and were picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to Fort Wellington Public Hospital. They were seen and examined by a doctor and transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where they were admitted as patients.
Sadly, Maltay was pronounced dead on arrival, and his body is presently lying at Fort Wellington Public Hospital’s Mortuary.
The other vehicle’s driver, Rajendra Deonarine, was admitted to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital for observation. The two occupants in his vehicle were not injured.
Investigations are ongoing.
