The relatives of 86-year-old Rookhai Kalloo are planning to sue the Fly Jamaica.
Kalloo died after she suffered a fractured skull when a Fly Jamaica plane, in which she was travelling, crash landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
A close friend of the family confirmed that the deceased’s children have already started consulting with lawyers.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that the airline has not offered the family any financial assistance for the funeral. Kalloo, who had been residing in Canada for more than 20 years, will be cremated this afternoon.
“The airline did not try to assist the family when the woman was in the hospital nor did they reach out to assist with funeral arrangement. A representative for the company said that the airline is investigating to determine whether the elderly woman’s death is linked to the accident,” the family friend said.
According to information received, when the plane crash landed, the elderly woman was rushed straight to a private hospital but her relatives were forced to transfer her to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation due to finances. She died a day later.
A Post Mortem examination confirmed that the woman died from a fractured skull. Kalloo was travelling with her daughter and granddaughter when she allegedly hit her head in the plane.
The Boeing 757-200 plane, destined for Toronto, Canada, included one American, 82 Canadians, 35 Guyanese, one Pakistani and one Trinidadian.
Public Infrastructure Minister, David Patterson had confirmed that about 20 minutes after the plane departed Guyana, the pilot reported a hydraulic problem and requested permission to return and land on the airstrip.
The Guyana Standard was told that the plane’s brakes reportedly failed, causing the aircraft to crash land.
Director of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Egbert Field, has confirmed that the black box of the Fly Jamaica aircraft—that crash landed—will be sent to the United States for decoding. This will help the authorities to understand what caused the accident.
