Guyana has recorded a staggering 2,247 traffic violations reported between September 10 and 16, 2023, underscoring the efforts of the Guyana Police Force (GPF)’s Traffic Department to enhance road safety throughout the nation.
Of these violations, a significant 652 were attributed to speeding, while 55 cases were related to Driving Under the Influence (DUI).
In addition to rigorous law enforcement, the GPF’s Traffic Department has undertaken a series of proactive measures to promote safer road usage. These initiatives encompassed engaging with the public at various locations, including schools, markets, liquor establishments, bus terminals, and communities.
Convictions have been secured in several instances, resulting in fines ranging from $60,000 to $200,000. Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, Traffic Chief, emphasized that Traffic Ranks will maintain their presence, engaging with the public at different times throughout the day, to facilitate the necessary changes aimed at reducing accidents and preventing unnecessary loss of lives.
Furthermore, bar owners are encouraged to prioritize responsible business ethics over profit, as this conscientious approach has the potential to save lives on the roadways.
