Police have detained a 28-year-old babysitter as part of an ongoing investigation into the death of Raheem Fung, a one-year-old of Circuitville, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Prior to his death, the child was on life-support machine at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) suffering from multiple head injuries.
The 28-year-old sitter is from Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and the incident is said to have occurred between July 1 and September 15, 2023, at Yarrowkabra.
Enquiries revealed that Raheem Fung is the son of Rhonda Kortright and Kevin Fung, who reside at Circuitville. The babysitter is the niece of Kevin Fung, and she resides at Yarrowkabra with her one-year-old daughter. During July 2023, Rhonda and Kevin agreed to leave Raheem in the care and custody of the 28-year-old, who would take care of him from Monday to Saturday due to their busy work schedule.
Sometime during the month of August 2023, Melissa contacted Rhonda and informed her that Raheem had fallen and hit his head. He was taken to the GPHC with a swollen forehead, and he was treated and sent away in a healthy condition, after which he remained in the care and custody of the 28-year-old.
On September 15, 2023, about 19:30 hrs, Melissa again contacted Rhonda, this time informing her that Raheem had caught a seizure and lost consciousness.
He was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Center by his mother and was examined before being transferred to GPHC. There, he was admitted into the ICU, on a life-support machine. He passed away earlier this afternoon. The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has confirmed that the matter, at the moment, is not being treated as a murder investigation. The force also noted that the sitter is cooperating with the investigators.
