The government has unveiled a series of major investments aimed at rejuvenating agriculture in Baracara Village, Canje River, Region Six. This initiative is expected to provide the community with significant benefits. During a recent visit to Baracara, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced plans to allocate machinery for the cultivation of 400 acres for red bean farming, a significant expansion from the initial 25 acres. “We are going to put the tractor and plough to work…I am not accepting anything below 400 acres of land to be prepared and work for the red beans,” the president remarked.
President Ali further highlighted the government’s commitment to aquaculture, revealing an investment in a sizable solar freezer for fish storage. Emphasizing the role of youth in innovation, he expressed intentions to foster natural aquaculture areas to diversify production. “We are going to work on examining how we can develop this in its natural environment with the young people. So, when we are out of the season, we will have agriculture farms that could still give us the Patwa, Hassar, Hourie, and Tilapia,” he stated.
In an effort to revitalize the livestock sector, Baracara will receive five heifers and two high-breed rams. Additionally, infrastructural projects are in the pipeline to support residents and farmers, including work on two significant creeks and a commitment to the ‘30,000 solar home systems’ project. “We are going to set aside, before the end of this year, 150 units for the 150 households in this community,” announced President Ali.
The community has responded with enthusiasm to these announcements, eagerly anticipating the enhanced productivity they will bring. The government’s previous work on a major community canal has already resulted in residents earning $10 million.
Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, also emphasized Baracara’s historical productivity and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to restoring its agricultural prominence. “We are on the verge of reaching there…We will continue to work with you…We will add value to [your] product and we will ensure that your product earns high income and find markets for your product,” Mustapha assured.
The meeting also saw the attendance of key governmental figures, including Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC., Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal, Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill, Culture, Youth, and Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr, and Local Government and Regional Development Minister Anand Persaud.
