President, Dr. Irfaan Ali confirmed with Guyana Standard today that the legal and administrative work has been completed to have the Order of Democracy gazetted and made part of the nation’s complement of national awards. The Order of Democracy is expected to honour those courageous persons who were instrumental in dismantling a plot that was afoot by certain actors within the APNU+AFC faction to corrupt the results of the 2015 General and Regional Elections results.
“It is anticipated that the production of the awards will be completed in six weeks,” the Head of State shared in a brief update.
First announced in 2021, Ali had said the award will hold great significance as it will recognize the men and women who set aside political differences to save the country’s international standing.
Ali had said that the Order will not only honour the patriots of 2020. “It will honour all in the future who put first our nation’s democracy, our people’s freedom, and our right to have respected, the national will expressed at free and fair elections justly conducted and uncontaminated by corruption.”
