Theories of treachery and greed are the current focal points of detectives probing the gruesome killing of a young city gold dealer.

The body of 21-year-old Amit Singh was found wrapped in a bedsheet on Tuesday, hours after he was lured by a fake gold deal orchestrated by several men to a property in La Penitence, Georgetown. The prime suspect has been identified as Yogeendra Sukhdeo, a local businessman known for flaunting wealth across the vast canvas of social media.

Instagram posts show Sukhdeo posing with firearms, gold and high-end liquor. Sukhdeo, investigators said, was by no stretch of the imagination “hand-to-mouth”, making it difficult to ascertain motive.

He is the purported owner of a business empire with dealing in the mining, construction, landscaping, property rentals and security sectors under the name “El Dorado”.

The property at Middle Road, La Penitence where Singh was killed is reportedly owned by Sukhdeo’s father. The approximate $7.7 million fleeced from Singh was found clandestinely tucked away within the confines of Sukhdeo’s residence at 20th Avenue Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara. The money was unearthed only hours after his apprehension.

Sukhdeo is painted as the mastermind behind this brutal homicide. He initially implicated three of his employees, who were subsequently taken into custody and seemingly disavowed any involvement.

However, Sukhdeo then recanted his prior statement, confiding in investigators that he acted alone. His sinister deed involved the bludgeoning of Singh with a piece of wood before wrapping the lifeless body with a sheet. Sukhdeo reportedly locked the door behind him, leaving the Singh’s remains behind.

Contrary to some media reports, it was revealed that the victim and suspect are not friends, instead, they were business associates with a history of prior transactions.

The Singh family is proprietor of D. Singh Trading in Campbellville, with the young man having delved into the gold trade industry to offer support when needed.

Investigations are ongoing.
