Guyana’s Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Anil Nandlall is urging Guyanese to act responsibly, particularly on social media, to avoid fueling tensions as neighbouring Venezuela escalates its claim for Essequibo.
Several weeks ago, the Guyana Government called upon the Venezuelan regime to desist its saber-ratting as its troops and heavy-duty weaponry began amassing at the border, triggering fear in Guyana, a country with a population of less than a million people.
Guyana is staring a Venezuelan referendum slated for December 3, 2023, which will determine the possible seizing of the area which represent a reported two-thirds of Guyanese territory.
In an impassioned appeal to the Guyanese citizenry at a special sitting of the National Assembly today, the AG warned: “Be careful with what you say and do, in particular in the social media. Irresponsible publications will only increase existing tensions. While we must stand strong in the expression of our patriotism, we must not commit acts which can be viewed as provocative; neither must we ill-treat our Venezuelan brothers and sisters among us. In the mean, there are here simply to pursue a better life.”
The AG’s call comes days after a Venezuelan duo was ordered to strip and walk down a road after they were allegedly caught stealing.
