In a stirring call for national unity and an end to partisan politics, Opposition Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir stood firm in the National Assembly on Monday, lending vigorous support to the government’s motion to spurn Venezuela’s contentious bid for the Essequibo territory. “We have to be serious, there is a goliath at the gate and we have to do like David and gather our stones,” declared Walton-Desir, drawing a vivid parallel to the biblical underdog’s fight for survival.

The Opposition MP made the foregoing contribution during an extraordinary sitting of the House. During her emotional presentation, she noted the existential threat facing Guyana’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and way of life, particularly in the face of Venezuela’s formidable claims and actions.

“We must now more than ever, forcefully reject any attempt…it is important because it is only as a united Guyana that we will stand a chance at defeating this Goliath,” she added.

The parliamentarian acknowledged the anxieties of Guyanese people, as she said they are worried about Venezuela’s territorial claims and the influx of Venezuelan migrants in the country. Notably, Walton-Desir stressed the importance of treating migrants with dignity while enforcing rules and laws. She also proposed legislative measures to address inappropriate activities that threaten Guyana’s sovereignty and emphasized the need for enhancing border screening, public education, and unity among the nation’s stakeholders.

The Opposition MP also urged Guyanese to reject a lower destiny and strive for excellence as a united people to confront the challenges and opportunities presented by this defining moment in history.

“We may not have might on our side but we have right on our side, we have the rule of law on our side, we have the support of the international community on our side…,” Walton-Desir said.

Moreover, the MP underscored that, “Now more than ever, we must be committed to full collaboration between the government and all national stakeholders. The time for petty, partisan politics is over.”

She stressed that the manner in which Guyana’s leaders choose to meet this moment in history will determine their collective legacy, their place in the world and in history.

In conclusion, Walton Desir reassured the people of Guyana that, together, they would emerge stronger and better, reaffirming the position of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
