A total of 151 souls were lost to carnage on Guyana’s roadways in 2023 thus far, compared to 88 during the corresponding period last year. This represents a staggering 71% increase. More concerning is that five of those lives were those of children.
Traffic Chief, Mahendra Singh, in his presentation this morning during the launch of the Guyana Police Force (GPF)’s “Christmas Policing Plan”, outlined that fatal accidents are on the rise by a staggering 59% (129) compared to the corresponding period last year, when a total of 81 were recorded.
Serious accidents have amounted to 263 compared to 323 last year. This represents a 19% decrease.
Minor accidents have accounted for 471 compared to 565 last year, reflecting a 17% decline.
Damaging accidents are at a 7% decline with 1,401 recording during this 2023 period compared to 1,495 last year.
Overall, there were 2,264 accidents in 2023 thus far, compared to 2,464 last year, translating to a 9% decline.
