Pandit Ubraj Narine and Alfred Mentore will now serve as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Georgetown respectively. The two members of the A Partnership for National Unity (PANU) fold were sworn in earlier today. Serving alongside them will be former Mayor Patricia Chase-Green and 28 other Councilors.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Chase-Green gave full support for Narine’s nomination to the post.
Speaking today with members of the media, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon said that the new Councilors will have their hands full, as there are a number of issues to address where the Mayor and City Council is concerned. He said that these range from the recurring problem of garbage collection and the indebted Council not having enough funds to pay contractors. He said that there are other matters relating to transparency and accountability which have to be addressed urgently.
The Minister said, “The New Council has its hands full but they must be given a chance to prove that they can address the problems before them…”
