Police disclosed on Saturday that they are investigating the death of Aurora Gold Mines driver, Joseph Licorish. Detectives said the incident occurred around 10:20 hrs today and involved motor lorry, TL-001, owned by Aurora and driven by Licorish, and another lorry, TL-19, also owned by the gold company and driven by Nigel Denny.
Enquiries disclosed that motor lorry TL 001 was proceeding north, descending a hill fully loaded with stones in the tray when it collided with motor lorry TL 19, which was proceeding south up the hill around a slight bend, also fully loaded with stones in the tray.
It is alleged by the driver of motor lorry TL 19, that he saw motor lorry TL 001 approaching him at a fast rate and swerving into his lane. On seeing that, he then pulled to his left to avoid a collision but to no avail. The collision caused the vehicle to flip on its left side injuring both drivers. The entire cabin of motor lorry TL 001 was dislodged with the driver pinned inside.
The driver was pulled out of the cabin by other workers and was rushed to the Aurora Health Center. Both operators were seen and examined by a doctor on duty. Unfortunately, Joseph Licorish, a 47-year-old from West Watooka, Wismar, was pronounced dead on arrival.
Nigel Denny, the 41-year-old from Georgetown, was treated at the said institution for injuries to his head and body. His condition is listed as stable.
Guyana Standard understands that CCTV cameras were seen mounted some distance away on a tower. Police said the footage will be reviewed and analyzed as investigations continue.
