The Guyana Development Initiative (GDI) said it is working to leverage partnerships with Harvard University to develop programmes that mitigate specific shortcomings and foster an enabling environment for Guyanese. These issues include skills gaps and labour shortages. This initiative was highlighted during the recent joint event with the American Chamber of Commerce of Guyana (AmCham Guyana), featuring Dr. Christian Ketels from the Harvard Business School.

Dr. Ketels, renowned for his expertise in long-term growth foundations, macroeconomic factors, and cluster-based policies, addressed key issues for sustainable private sector growth in the context of Guyana. Emphasizing strategic thinking, operational effectiveness, and partnerships, his insights resonated with the diverse audience, including AmCham Guyana’s membership, representatives from the wider Guyana private sector, and diplomatic community members.

While Dr. Ketels’ insightful presentation on “Company Strategy and the Role of the Private Sector in Guyana’s Development” delved into crucial aspects of sustainable growth, a key focus emerged during discussions surrounding GDI’s efforts to forge partnerships with Harvard University. The GDI, a project led by the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School, aims to use Harvard resources in supporting Guyana’s developmental endeavors.

The collaboration between GDI and Harvard University was also underscored by industry leaders present at the event who engaged in discussions about how such partnerships can address critical areas, including the skills gaps, labor retention, and strategic alignment with government priorities.

GDI has noted that the step signifies a proactive approach in identifying specific areas where Harvard’s expertise can contribute to Guyana’s development.

In addition, it stated that as it continues to strengthen its ties with Harvard University, the partnership promises to be a catalyst for transformative initiatives in the country’s growth and development landscape.
