Two men were killed last night in a collision with a lorry as they were fleeing with a stolen motorcycle.

Police are investigating the accident that occurred around 23:20hrs last night (Thursday) on the Diamond Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), resulting in the death of the two Grove, EBD men.

The accident involved motor lorry (GAF 2356) driven by Hitram Basmattie, a 55-year-old from Timehri; and a motorcycle(CL9127) driven by Ashton Mc Curdy of Lot 243 second street Grove; and pillion rider Mark Green, a 31-year-old labourer of Lot 250 Nazarene Street, Grove Housing Scheme.

The motorcycle is owned by Trevor Hunte, a 48-year-old security guard of Grove Housing Scheme.

Enquiries disclosed that the lorry was proceeding west on the southern side of Diamond Access Road, when the motorcycle, heading in the opposite direction on First Bridge Diamond, according to police, failed to stop at the intersection.

This resulted in the motorcycle colliding with the right-side rear wheel of the lorry, causing both the rider and the pillion rider to fall onto the road’s surface where they both received injuries.

An ambulance arrived on the scene after the accident, picked up Mark Green and escorted him to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he received medical attention and was later pronounced dead.

Ashton Mc Curdy was also escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The bodies of the motorcyclist and pillion rider were taken to the Memorial Garden Funeral Home, awaiting post-mortem examinations. The driver of the lorry is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

The Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent, Mahendra Singh has confirmed that the motorcycle was stolen by Green and Mc Curdy, who were in the process of fleeing with the cycle when the accident occurred.
