To enhance its campus facilities, Texila American University (TAU) has submitted plans to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the construction of a state-of-the-art student hostel and staff accommodation complex.
TAU, known for its diverse range of international standard programs, said it is responding to the growing demand for higher education, particularly from the Caribbean. The proposed projects, located at the TAU Campus at Lot 2442 Plantation Providence and Ellen Ville in East Bank Demerara, showcase the university’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities for its students and staff.
Over the years, TAU has earned a reputation as a beacon of higher education, offering a comprehensive array of programs spanning Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Allied Sciences, Management, and Information Technology. With a global reach extending to more than 40 countries, TAU said it has witnessed a steady increase in student enrollment, especially from the Caribbean region.
In response to this surge, TAU has chosen to address the accommodation needs of its growing student body by proposing the construction of the modern student hostel. Located at the existing TAU Campus Lot 2442 Plantation Providence, the strategic site is nestled between a call center (Qualfon) and the new Hyatt Place Hotel, reflecting the university’s commitment to creating a conducive and vibrant learning environment.
The hostel’s design embodies safety, sustainability, and student comfort. Comprising separate blocks for girls and boys, the facility boasts 86 two-room apartments, 16 one-room apartments, and various amenities such as a warden room, a parent’s waiting room, a sick room, laundry facilities, and more. With a keen focus on environmental responsibility, the hostel will incorporate solar passive architecture, ensuring energy efficiency and minimal resource consumption.
Noteworthy safety features include three emergency exits, three staircases per building, and a lift for students with disabilities. The smart system management integrates electricity from multiple sources—Guyana Power Limited, a generator, and a solar plant—ensuring a reliable and eco-friendly power supply for student comfort.
Beyond academic pursuits, the hostel aims to provide a holistic student experience with access to a playground, gym, and canteen facilities. Security measures, including 24/7 monitoring through security personnel and cameras, will also contribute to a safe and secure living environment. Emergency medical support is also embedded in the facility’s infrastructure, aligning with a comprehensive emergency response plan.
Additionally, TAU envisions providing accommodation for its dedicated staff, with plans for a staff accommodation complex at Ellen Ville, Providence, East Bank Demerara. The university’s commitment extends to the meticulous stages of construction, including land preparation, survey, foundation works, and collaborative efforts with local experts to ensure compliance with Guyanese standards and conditions.
As the university awaits the necessary approvals, the proposed projects mark a significant step in TAU’s ongoing mission to provide not just education but a holistic environment for growth, learning, and community building.
