Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill has made an impassioned plea to truck operators to respect the weight limit on roads to prevent further damage to public infrastructure. He made this call during the consideration of Budget 2024 estimates in the Committee of Supply on Wednesday night. His appeal was registered prior to the approval of a whopping $73.2 billion geared at the furtherance of the Guyana Government’s programme to build and maintain community roads.
Edghill was grilled by Opposition Members of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir and Annette Ferguson on his allocations. It was the former who questioned the minister about the possibility of regulations geared at enforcing weigh limits along Guyana’s roads.
Edghill said his ministry is cognizant that roads are being abused and announced that works are underway to have a draft regulation presented soon. In the interim, Edghill said heavy-duty operators must use a moral compass when traversing the roadways. The minister lamented the huge trucks going into communities as well as the wreaking of roads by contractors.
“We have to come together as a country and say this nonsense must stop,” Edghill stressed.
