The Government of Guyana will leave no stone unturned when it comes to implementing a suite of measures that will uproot every last ecstasy and marijuana trading network. This assurance was provided by President, Dr. Irfaan Ali during an exclusive interview with Guyana Standard.
Ali said his administration is concerned about the infiltration of various forms of drugs and how some networks are expanding as a result of the relaxed legal systems in overseas territories.
“You have new forms of weed such as creepy and all of these new types of drugs used in vaping… But what we have is a global system that is failing. We are now seeing new studies that show marijuana is creating a lot of challenges for societies that would have opened up completely for the use of it,” said Ali.
He noted that some developed societies have legalized the use of marijuana. As a result, it has brought down the cost to supply other markets. He said these relaxed systems have allowed for the re-engineering of the trade.
Ali said he is particularly concerned about the impact of drug use in the school system and how it is changing behavioral patterns.
He noted that the relevant authorities are making strides in dismantling some networks, adding that in the last two weeks, “we have made significant drug seizures.” The President said investigations on the source of these supplies have revealed that many of them are foreign nationals.
“…as the prosperity of the country grows, the criminal network will look to expand trade. So we need to have more intelligence-led operations, and we are deploying such initiatives in communities as well as near our borders,” said Ali while mulling the need for stronger penalties.
