The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) has unveiled remarkable achievements in its energy projects for 2023. A cornerstone of GEA’s endeavours it said was the implementation of a large-scale electrification initiative aimed at providing 30,000 solar home energy systems to hinterland and riverine communities.
By December 2023, it said over 26,000 units had been distributed, each capable of powering essential appliances and devices, thereby significantly enhancing energy access in these remote areas.
Additionally, 19 communities spanning various regions benefited from the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grids, serving over 21,000 individuals and 3,880 households. These systems, totaling 601 kilowatt peak (KWp) in capacity, not only provide electricity to public and community buildings but also contribute to vital sectors such as education and healthcare.
Furthermore, the GEA’s efforts extended to the commissioning of a 1.5 MW utility-scale solar PV plant in Bartica, Region Seven, bolstering the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure. Moreover, the agency installed solar PV capacity and battery energy storage systems at 22 off-grid locations, bringing electricity to public buildings across multiple regions.
In a move towards sustainable transportation, GEA also spearheaded the installation of six electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in key regions, signaling Guyana’s readiness for an electric mobility future. Additionally, capacity-building initiatives provided training for 50 mechanics and auto-technicians, fostering expertise in EV maintenance and repairs.
Looking ahead, GEA said it anticipates further advancements with the 2024 budget approval, including the construction of solar farms in Leguan and Mahdia, along with the implementation of new solar PV mini-grids in Region Nine. These initiatives, the agency noted, underscore Guyana’s commitment to transitioning towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape.
The GEA also stressed that its relentless pursuit of renewable energy solutions underscores its pivotal role in steering the nation towards a sustainable, low-carbon future and with continued support and investment, Guyana is poised to emerge as a global leader in renewable energy innovation and environmental stewardship.
