General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, today urged citizens to be wary of a series of online scams falsely linking prominent Guyanese figures to fraudulent schemes.
Earlier, today the Vice President issued a warning on his Facebook page. Addressing the issue during his press conference, Jagdeo expressed concern over the circulation of misleading information involving himself, President Irfaan Ali, Senior Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, and others.
“So I noticed a number of things, a lot of scam stuff going around about people like Ashni Singh, the president, myself, even Elson Low. I saw that they said he passed away,” Jagdeo said.
Highlighting the deceptive nature of these scams, he mentioned a scam that used a photo of Dr. Ashni Singh, falsely claiming that Dr. Singh had amassed wealth by investing in particular software and encouraging others to do the same.
“So I saw the one with Ashni Singh, how he got rich by investing through a software into some scheme and their urging people to invest through that same software, so if you’re stupid and you put your money there and they’re gone with your money,” he said.
Jagdeo explained that these fraudulent schemes are targeting individuals using sensational stories to obtain their personal information. “It’s something generated I think abroad and with all these sensational stories…please don’t fall prey to them,” he cautioned.
Moreover, the Vice President stressed that these scams exploit the names of well-known individuals to deceive the public. “And they use prominent people to say ‘oh Ashni Singh microphone was off in an interview and he was telling people how he was investing through this software,’” Jagdeo elaborated.
Furthermore, Jagdeo urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with these fraudulent schemes. “If you’re stupid and you put your money there and they gone with your money. Don’t blame the government, it’s a scam that’s going around,” Dr. Jagdeo stated.
He continued, “If you’re stupid you’d lose your money, don’t blame and say Ashni Singh had invested in the software. It’s a scam.”
