Star cyclist, Briton John took his talents to French Guiana and finished second overall in the grueling Tour de Guyane which concluded yesterday in Cayenne.

In the 33rd edition of the nine-stage event which rode off on August 17, the local wheelsman won the third stage and held the coveted yellow jersey as the race leader. He was just nine seconds shy of achieving the overall honours, marking one of the closest finishes for the fixture.

His remarkable performance was underlined by the fact that it was the first time in 25 years that a Guyanese has climbed the podium step at the prestigious international event.

John, the national road race champion, was supported by five other local riders, inclusive of Curtis Dey who completed the tiring race.

Dey provided invaluable support for John throughout the competition. His commitment and teamwork played a crucial role in this outstanding result. Unfortunately, the other members of Team Guyana were unable to complete the race due to various challenges, but their efforts and perseverance remain commendable.

John’s performance was labeled as historic by the Guyana Cycling Federation.

“This achievement represents a significant milestone for cycling in Guyana and serves as an inspiration for future generations of cyclists. The Guyana Cycling Federation is proud of the team’s performance and looks forward to building on this success in the years to come.”

To honour John, Dey, and the team’s efforts, a simple reception will be held in recognition of their success and contribution to Guyanese cycling.
