The Ministry of Education has announced a new Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) that brings substantial improvements to the compensation and benefits for teachers nationwide. This agreement underscores the government’s commitment to supporting educators and recognizing their vital contributions to children’s education and national development.
Under the new terms, teachers will receive salary increases of 10% in 2024, 8% in 2025, and 9% in 2026, with possible adjustments if public servants receive higher rates during these years. Teachers in remote areas will see their Remote Area Incentive increase from $20,000 to $23,000 monthly, marking a 156% increase from November 2023 levels.
The agreement also boosts allowances for teachers with advanced degrees. Doctoral degree holders will receive a monthly allowance of $32,000, while those with master’s degrees will see their allowance increase to $22,000. Educators with postgraduate diplomas, advanced graduate diplomas, and certificates in education will have their allowances raised to $7,000 and $5,000, respectively. Additionally, teachers who completed the Certificate in Education Management Course will now receive a monthly allowance of $5,000.
Station and hardlying allowances have been increased to $5,000 for eligible teachers, with varying percentage increases depending on the category. The clothing allowance has nearly doubled from $8,000 to $15,000, and the number of duty-free concessions has increased by 50%, from 100 to 150 annually. Senior teachers approaching retirement and those in hinterland and riverine areas will benefit from concessions on motorcars, outboard engines, and ATVs.
Furthermore, the Ministry has doubled the number of annual scholarships for teachers, enabling 100 educators to pursue studies at the University of Guyana or through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL). Retired teachers reemployed will be paid at their last salary scale, and for the first time, teachers will be compensated for marking and supervising SBAs and National Grades 5 & 6 Mock Exams. Non-graduate teachers will receive two additional increments after three years of continuous service, impacting over 9,000 teachers.
The Ministry of Education said it remains committed to ongoing dialogue with the teaching community to ensure continued progress and development in the education sector.
