Permit me to bring to your attention, an important initiative that aims to enhance the quality of education for students with disabilities and promote inclusivity within our education system. Just recently, 51 teachers graduated with an Associate Degree in special education.

This particular programme is designed to equip teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide effective support in both special education schools and mainstream classrooms.

As we strive to create a more inclusive society, it is imperative that we address the educational needs of learners with disabilities. By providing educators with robust training in special education methodologies, we can ensure that all students, regardless of their abilities, have access to quality education and the opportunity to succeed.

Access to educational opportunities for persons with disabilities remains a critical issue in our society. By implementing this training programme, we aim to break down barriers and ensure that every learner, regardless of their challenges, is afforded the right to a quality education. In this cohort, teachers focused on one of two areas; autism or intellectual disabilities

Moreover, this programme aligns with both local (Laws of Guyana 39:01) and international legislation, aimed at promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. By adhering to these legal frameworks, we are not only fulfilling our obligations, but also championing the cause of equity and inclusion in the education system. This initiative also exemplifies our commitment to fostering an education system that is responsive to the needs of all learners.

The Ministry of Education therefore believes that the introduction of this training programme will have a transformative impact on our education system.
