The Bureau of Statistics has recommenced the Guyana Labour Force Survey (GLFS), a quarterly household assessment designed to gather essential data on employment, unemployment, and underemployment trends in the country.
The survey covers all regions of Guyana and includes individuals aged 15 and older, regardless of their employment status. It examines household composition, demographics, internal migration, education, vocational training, job search activities, work availability, income, and working hours.
Enumerators, equipped with official badges and tablet computers, will visit households to collect data using digital questionnaires. The process involves two types of questionnaires.
The Household Questionnaire is administered to one member of the household to gather general data, with questions such as, “In which country were you born?” and “How many years have you been residing in Guyana continuously?” It also explores the highest level of education attained and current enrollment in educational institutions.
The Individual Questionnaire, administered to each household member aged 15 and above, focuses on personal employment details. Questions include, “In the last seven days, did you engage in any work for pay, even if only for an hour?” and “If offered a job or the chance to start a business, could you begin work immediately?” Interviews are expected to take approximately 20–30 minutes per individual.
The data collected through this survey will provide valuable labour force indicators at the national level. These insights will guide the government in addressing employment challenges, shaping labour market policies, and implementing programmes that promote economic growth, job creation, and training opportunities.
The Bureau of Statistics urges all selected households to participate so that the agency can capture an accurate picture of Guyana’s labour landscape.
