Cops last night shot a suspect in a domestic violence matter who was resisting arrest, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has said.

The incident occurred at 21:30hrs last night (Wednesday) in Sophia.

Guyana Standard understands that two police ranks were on mobile patrol duty when they were called to assist other ranks at Turkeyen Police Station on a report of domestic violence committed on an 18-year-old female sales representative from ‘E’ Field Sophia.

The ranks accompanied the 18-year-old female victim to the home of the suspect, her 25-year-old boyfriend, Quincy Morris, whom she claimed assaulted her.

Upon arrival, they met with the sisters of the suspect who informed the ranks that Morris was not at home. While the ranks were leaving, the suspect (Quincy Morris) was seen approaching the house with about 20 other males.

The ranks approached Morris and informed him about the allegations made against him, but he allegedly responded: “I am not going anywhere…This is Sophia”. He then pulled what appeared to be a handgun from the waist of his pants and pointed it at the ranks.

As a result, one of the police ranks drew his service 9mm pistol and discharged one (1) round in the suspect’s direction after which the suspect fell to the ground. Upon seeing this, the group of men circled the two ranks and one of the males in the group retrieved the suspected firearm (that Morris had) and made good his escape during the chaotic scene.

The ranks made contact with the Police Operations Room for assistance. The suspect was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is undergoing treatment for a gunshot wound to his upper thigh. His condition is stable. He is presently under police guard.

Several persons were questioned as investigations continue.
