President Dr Irfaan Ali at the inauguration of the Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base on Saturday evening urged Guyanese politicians to stop using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate speeches for the 2025 budget debates.
During his speech, the president addressed the role of AI in modern society and underscored that while it can be a useful tool, it should not replace human judgment and critical thinking. “AI is just a tool. It does not negate the human power to analyze and critically evaluate,” the head-of-state cautioned.
“We are ready to embrace the challenges of the future, to apply and adopt the best technology, to build the most skilled labor force in this region, to build an economy that is economically and socially sustainable,” Dr. Ali said.
To this end, however, he turned his attention to the use of AI in parliamentary debates and issued a warning to those relying on AI to generate their contributions.
He said, “I want to remind debaters in parliament that AI is a tool. Be careful. AI is a tool to help you. It is not a thinking platform, it is not a management platform, and it is not, definitely not a public policy making platform. It is a tool, stop generating AI speeches and regurgitating.”
President Ali also stated that he has asked the Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir to address the issue, in order to ensure that authentic and thoughtful contributions are made by politicians.
Ali’s remarks come amid several social media posts calling out Opposition members for allegedly using AI to generate their Facebook posts, particularly on the 2025 budget.
