A motion submitted to the National Assembly by Opposition Member of Parliament (MP), Ganesh Mahipaul seeks to crackdown on the illegal use of sirens and flashing lights.

Notably, the motion urges the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to take immediate action against the unauthorized use of sirens and flashing red and blue lights by private vehicles. The motion was seconded by Opposition Chief Whip Christopher Jones.

According to the document, such illegal practices create confusion on the roads, endanger public safety, and undermine the authority of emergency responders.

“The illegal use of sirens and flashing red and blue lights by private individuals and vehicles poses a significant risk to public safety, causes confusion on the roadways, undermines the authority of legitimate emergency vehicles, and may lead to dangerous situations, including accidents and improper prioritization of traffic,” Mahipaul stated in his motion.

The Opposition MP further argues that stricter enforcement of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act (Chapter 51:02) is necessary to restore order on Guyana’s roads.

“This illegal use of emergency lights and sirens by private vehicles creates an environment of lawlessness and puts undue pressure on law enforcement agencies, potentially impeding their ability to perform their duties effectively and respond to emergencies promptly,” he said.

The motion calls on the police to take decisive action in identifying, charging, and prosecuting all individuals and entities found guilty of the illegal use of sirens and flashing red and blue lights, in accordance with the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act (Chapter 51:02). It also recommends increased road checks, public awareness campaigns, and a report to the National Assembly within three months on the effectiveness of enforcement efforts.
