Police are investigating an alleged incident which occurred at about 02:00hrs on Thursday at Gafoor’s compound in Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.

According to Lionel Duke, a 22-year-old Supernumerary Constable employed with Sheriff Security Service, on the date and time mentioned, he was on duty at the location mentioned, armed with the security service 9MM Pistol and one magazine containing 10 live 9MM rounds of ammunition. Duke said he went into the washroom, which is situated on the eastern side of the compound, and while there, he took out the firearm from his pants pocket to clear it and a shot went off and hit him on his right foot, below his knee.

Duke said he then called a friend, a 23-year-old businessman from Parafaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, via cellphone who went and took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is presently seeking medical attention.

Police visited the scene at around 04:30 hrs this morning and one 9MM spent shell was found in the washroom area. The firearm along with nine 9MM rounds of ammunition were also seized and lodged at the Turkeyen Police Station. Investigations are in progress.
