As a result of the people-centred policies enacted by the PPP/C administration, residents of Region Six have deposited $44.4 billion more in their bank accounts. Making this pronouncement on Sunday was President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali. He was at the time delivering his tribute to celebrate the life and legacy of former President, the late Dr Cheddi Jagan, at Babu John in Port Mourant, Corentyne.

Before a gathering of thousands of party supporters, all decked in red shirts, Ali said, “Now comrades, if you saving more money or you have more money to put in your bank account, are you better off? Good, well let me tell you the story of Region Six alone.”

According to the Bank of Guyana’s statistics, Ali said deposits in the commercial banks at Region Six between 2019 and today grew by 72% from $61.8 billion to $106.2 billion. Ali said this clearly shows that citizens have more disposable income, that people are better off, that the economy is better, that productivity has increased and “life is better here in Guyana…”

In addition to the sizeable deposits, Ali said his government upon assuming office, rehired 1,055 workers in Region Six along with 4,000 new hires, most of whom are women. These hires he said represent an additional investment of $5.8 billion in families.

In agriculture, across the country, the president said his government spent more than $220 billion, noting that these investments served to undo many of the unjust and crass effects of the APNU+AFC regime in the sugar sector. He was also keen to note that Region Six has been a major beneficiary of the government’s multibillion dollar programme, highlighting that almost $20 billion every year is spent to secure the livelihood of farmers. The president stressed that the investment in agriculture in this region is actually almost five times what the APNU invested in their five years of government.

If these investments are to continue, the Head of State cautioned supporters, and citizens by extension, to not fall prey to the dooms-day messaging from certain quarters. Ali said, “ We stand to lose all of this if we lose our political consciousness, if we become trapped by the naysayers… as fancy as they may come.”

The official assured that his government has the best interest of the nation at heart, adding, “we are not seasonal in our approach to development, we are your constant, we are your reliable partner and we are your relentless fighter in growth and development.”
