The Alliance For Change (AFC) has called for a unified national approach in response to the 38% tariff imposed by the United States on Guyanese goods. The party warned that the measure could have significant adverse implications for the country’s economic trajectory and underscored the need for bipartisan collaboration to address the issue.

In a statement, the AFC emphasized that while the United States is acting in its own national interest, Guyana must also adopt a strategic response that safeguards its economic well-being. The party urged consultations across the political divide, both at the national and regional levels, to assess the full impact of the tariffs and to formulate short- and medium-term strategies to mitigate their effects.

“The Unites States has acted in its own national interest and it is incumbent on us collectively as a country and as a member of CARICOM to not only assess the impact of the imposition of tariffs on our national and regional economic well-being but also to consult across the political divide,” the party said.

The AFC’s position comes in the wake of a press statement from the Ministry of Finance, which acknowledged the tariff imposition and assured that the government is engaging with its U.S. counterparts to address the matter.

However, the AFC insists that the response must extend beyond government-to-government discussions and involve broader national dialogue.
