The Guyana Police Force said several of its ranks were injured during “unrest” in Linden today, following the death of a 21-year-old Lindener, allegedly at the hands of a police Sargeant last evening.
In response to the development, the force said that its ranks discharged rounds at the crowd in an effort to mitigate the situation where they were burning tires and destroying government infrastructure.
Additionally, as the police engaged protesters, “they were greeted with missiles”, the police force said.
“The rounds discharged at the protesters caused the demise of a protester,” it confirmed in a press release moments ago.
The identity of the man has not yet been released, however, residents were heard referring to him as “Dan” in a video that was shared on Big Smith News Watch/Facebook.
It also noted that the ranks were placed under arrest and the Office of Professional Responsibility has commenced investigations. The Guyana Standard understands that members of the Regional Security System (RSS) will lead an independent investigation.
Police vehicles were also vandalized and damaged in the process.
