The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating the deaths of two persons who lost their lives yesterday in separate incidents.
The victims have been identified as 54-year-old Timothy Hunter, a pitman of Jawalla Reservation, Upper Mazaruni River, who died when a mining pit collapsed on him; and 31-year-old Godfrey Wayne Gomes, of “C’ Field Sophia who was killed in an accident.
In the first case, Hunter along with other workers were working inside a mining pit at Ominaik Village, Upper Mazaruni around 16:30 hrs yesterday when a section of the wall collapsed and covered him. He was unresponsive by the time he was removed.
Hunter’s death is the first mining pit accident for 2019.
In the second case, Gomes is alleged to have ran over the Number 61 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice and into the path of a motor lorry, GVV 5643 around 16:00 hrs yesterday. He died while receiving treatment.
According to information revealed, the Lorry was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the road when according to the driver; the pedestrian suddenly ran from east to west, into the vehicle’s path.
Gomes was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he received treatment and was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital. There, he succumbed to his injuries. The driver who passed a Breathalyzer test, is in custody assisting with the investigation.
