The Petroleum Commission Bill which will pave the way for the establishment of a regulatory body for the oil sector is still stuck in the National Assembly’s Special Select Committee, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, confirmed today.
The Guyana Standard asked the Minister to say if the Bill will make it to the House for consideration and passage before upcoming elections. To this, Williams said, “I don’t see why not. We have to get on with the business of the people. Oil is important.”
This news agency then asked Williams if any law pertinent to the oil sector has reached his Chambers for final review. He said, “As the Government’s draftsman, we are the last word before anything goes to Parliament but none [of the petroleum-related laws] have reached us.”
Further to this, the Minister said that a team from the Energy Department paid him a visit and there were discussions on the laws which needed amendments. “(But) the ball is in their court. They have to let us know,” the Minister expressed.
