Around 01:30 hrs this morning, a woman delivered a healthy baby girl in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with the help of members from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
The Guyana Standard has been informed that GDF members were doing a medevac to the Mabaruma Hospital when the woman, Aloma Roberts, went into labour onboard the vessel.
Roberts is from Wauna, Region One. Lance Corporal Nickel Charles, a Guyana Defence Force medic, immediately went into action and delivered the baby several miles out in the Atlantic Ocean. The medic was assisted by the soldiers on board.
The mother and baby were subsequently transferred to the Mabaruma Hospital by a GDF Coast Guard high-speed patrol craft which intercepted the boat in the Atlantic Ocean. The team that delivered the baby visited the duo this afternoon at the hospital.
