A jury this afternoon found Sukhdeo Dharamdat and his son, Eshwardat Dharamdat guilty in the killing of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara accountant Suresh Nandkishore, who they beat until his skull had cracked open during a fight over a disputed plot of land.
The elder Dharamdat was found guilty of murder while his son was found guilty on the lesser charge of manslaughter. The jury’s verdict in respect to the two was unanimous.
The duo had pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on February 3, 2015, at Handsome Creek, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, they murdered Nandkishore.
They were represented by attorneys-at-Law, Brandon DeSantos, Alana Lall, and Pamela De Santos who asked the court to have probation reports prepared on their clients before sentencing is passed.
In this regard, trial Judge Navindra Singh adjourned the matter until May 7, 2019 to pass sentence on the men.
Prosecutors Tuanna Hardy, Abigail Gibbs, and Teriq Mohamed presented the case for the State. This trial was heard at the High Court in Demerara.
According to reports, the now dead man and two of his family members were in the process of erecting a fence when a heated argument ensued between them and the Dharamdats.
Things later escalated into a fight during which the Dharamdats attacked Nandkishore with a cutlass and two of the posts meant for the fence.
It was reported that Nandkishore, who sustained a cracked skull, was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The land on which the fence was being erected was the subject of a land dispute between the Dharamdats and Nandkishores.
However, during the Dharamdats’ trial, it was revealed that the Nandkishores won rights to the land through a court order.
